PECM at Berger

Production and Service

Highest precision for your requirements - with this goal in mind, together, with the machine manufacturer and our customers, Berger has spent the last 13 years developing Precision Electrochemical Metal Machining (PECM) in a goal-oriented manner. As a result of this dedication, Berger has conceived technology that is unique. Berger's worldwide proprietary application process enables the highest precision in terms of surface and contour accuracy.
With the expansion of our PECM capacity in 2022, Berger is able to offer small series and prototype productions for the first time. High-precision, burr-free geometries and surfaces can be produced with significantly less machining times, which are often requirements in the medical-technology, aerospace and consumer sectors.

PECM process

Non-contact process

Precision electrochemical machining (PECM) is a nonconventional machining process that can help deliver complex and precise components quickly and accurately. It uses electrodes and a pulsed direct current to dissolve practically any electrically conductive metal. In this process, the electrode is imaged inversely on the metal. The targeted current pulse, the oscillating tool electrode and the very small working gap are the basis for highly precise and efficient production.

Because the electrode does not touch the part, the material properties of the part do not figure into the process. PECM reduces the number of steps required to sculpt a part because it creates finished, burr-free shapes and holes in a single step. This flexible technology allows metals to be machined into highly complex geometrical shapes for a myriad of applications.

PECM advantages

Precision in perfection

Our customers benefit from an extremely efficient manufacturing process that offers enormous advantages over conventional manufacturing methods in terms of economy, ecology and technology:

  • Scalable process for the production of prototypes, small and large series
  • High-precision geometries and surfaces as well as absolutely burr-free transitions and bore intersections
  • Achievable surface roughness down to RA 0.05 µm
  • No time-consuming, cost-intensive post-machining processes
  • Processing of almost all electrically conductive metals regardless of their hardness
  • Machining of superalloys, high-alloy and heat-treated steels
  • Low tool wear due to lack of deposits on tools
  • High process productivity due to simultaneous machining of several components
  • No thermal influence on the metallurgical structure of the part
